For each scenario below, choose
the most appropriate test to confirm the diagnosis from the list above. Each
option may be used once, more than once or not at all.
1. A 43 year old obese female is
seen by her GP because she has noticed a large number of bruises appearing
around her body. On further questioning she reports recurrent episodes of
abdominal pain in the RUQ and notices that she sometimes turns yellow.
2. A 19 year old male is seen
because he is feeling tired and easily becomes short of breath. He has had
daily abdominal pain and diarrhoea often containing blood for 2 years but was
afraid to visit his GP. He also has a painful rash over his shins. Further
testing reveals a macrocytic anaemia and his B12 levels are low.
3. A 45 year old Irish woman
recently diagnosed with osteoporosis presented to her GP with fatigue, frequent
bloating and a rash over her elbows.
4. A 22 year old Caucasian male
is admitted with an LRTI, his third this year. On investigation he appears thin
and jaundiced. His stools are offensive and difficult to flush.
5. A 51 year old morbidly obese
woman presents to her GP with bloating, nausea and diarrhoea. 6 months ago she
was surgically treated for her obesity with a gastric bypass.
